The traffic evolution is already underway. It’s all part of the ultimate prospect of autonomous vehicles, and IoT technology– data about single journeys, routes, and even cars would be centrally monitored, systematized, and controlled. Here are the top 3 technology trends impacting traffic safety in the U.S.

1. Better Traffic Technology and Increasing Innovations in Traffic Safety Products

As we talk about security, one of the areas that can’t be ignored would be traffic management. The US is one of the countries that suffer from high road fatalities, and for a lot of people, this can be a form of wake-up call of what can happen if you’ll ignore traffic issues. If this is already proven to work, what more if these traffic zones would be embedded with IoT technology as well? It will be capable of alerting the drivers and authorities during accidents as well.

As computers get maximum control of vehicles, there won’t be a need of installing stop lights at road intersections. This is the primary purpose of the autonomous intersection technology. Wherein, instead of stopping at red stop lights, autonomous vehicles would list a time interval through a crossroad simultaneously, slowing down or speeding up to ensure that they’re going to be in the exact spot at the exact time, instead of crashing into another vehicle.

For this to work, the road should be filled with autonomous cars, because if there’s still plenty of manual cars, the idea would be a little terrifying for drivers. However, once people start to rely on the software, they’ll also get acquainted with the thought of cars passing through the intersection.

Despite that traffic data is impossible to monitor the trend of traffic in the real world, and the traffic lights operated algorithmically, it’s still unlikely to come up with a way to turn the stop lights to green as the vehicles pull up. Changing the stop lights is not as easy as it may sound.

For that reason, as we make a transition to autonomous cars in the future, it’s imperative to fix this issue first. One way is to introduce “platooning” of self-driving cars. There would be the main car in control of a group of vehicles.

Luminescent lane lines are utilized to ensure road safety, and another invention, “The Solar Roadways” project also got the attention of experts globally as it pushes the US government into discovering alternative energy solutions that would promote better road infrastructure. It is believed that these innovations would get the attention it deserved and improved later on.

Be it safer highways or the use of better materials; it is believed that technology trends would have an effect on traffic safety. Additionally, as road management develops to bring IoT technology to the next level, city planning will also be affected. Road congestion has always been a problem globally, and because of that, professionals start to treat road management as a scientific study.
